Wood Floor Types

<< Back

What types of wood floors are there and how are they installed?

Solid Wood Planks- We undertake only the tried and tested methods of installing solid wood floors, and that is the traditional secret nailing method. Solid wood planks are nailed through the tongue of the board. This type of installation requires a timber type subfloor to be nailed to ie. existing joists, existing floorboards (if sound) or if you have a concrete floor either battens or plywood will need to be put down first to nail to.
Most wood floors are factory finished with either lacquer, oil, or wax and need no site finishing. Reclaimed wood floors are all unfinished and will need to be sanded (sometimes by hand) and finished on site.

Solid Wood Blocks- Used to create patterns like herringbone, blocks or traditional parquet can be stuck. Modern adhesives have replaced the bitumen used during the last 100 years, but the principals are the same. These can be stuck to an existing concrete floor if they are flat and dry (nb if they are not flat they will need to be leveled with a leveling compound) or stuck to a sheet material. All wood blocks are unfinished and will require site sanding and finishing.
